What is Botox?

Botox is an injection that many men and women use to make minor cosmetic adjustments to their faces. Namely, Botox allows you to diminish dynamic wrinkles that become more defined with age due to your muscle movements.

Dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead creases can make you look sad, angry, or tired, even if that’s not how you feel. Reducing them not only resets your facial expression, it also makes you look more youthful.

How does Botox work?

The key ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin, which comes from some forms of bacteria. If that name sounds familiar, it’s probably because it’s the same toxin that causes botulism, a form of food poisoning. This is no cause for concern. In small doses, botulinum toxin is harmless to your health.

Instead, the small dose of botulinum toxin in each syringe of Botox temporarily inhibits the movement of the small muscles in your face. As a result, the skin over these muscles becomes smooth for as long as the drug stays active.

What should I expect during my Botox injection appointment?

The entire Botox injection procedure lasts no longer than 10-15 minutes. Your provider uses a very fine needle to carefully place each injection near your most defined dynamic wrinkles. The fine needle and low dosage minimize the pain you feel during the procedure. In fact, many patients compare the sensation to an insect bite.

Following your appointment, you’re free to drive yourself home or even back to work. You might notice some slight bruising near the injection sites, but it’s easy to cover up with some makeup.

How long do Botox results last?

Botox is temporary, but you can get injections repeatedly as you see your wrinkles reappear. The results last 4-6 months, so you’ll likely need to come back to Petrin Dermatology for more injections 2-3 times each year.

Can anyone get Botox injections?

Botox injections are safe for many patients, but they’re not the right choice for everyone. Your provider at Petrin Dermatology determines whether Botox is for you after a brief consultation. You are a candidate for cosmetic Botox injections if you:

  • Are over age 18

  • Have mild or moderate dynamic wrinkles

  • Are in decent health

  • Have reasonable expectations for the results

If Botox won’t achieve your goals or you’re not a candidate, your Petrin Dermatology provider suggests other treatments.

To see if Botox is the answer to your fine facial lines, call Petrin Dermatology or book a consultation online today.
